Consultancy

Not everyone has in-house experts in technology-supported learning. We’ve worked with a wide range of people - from universities, government and media organisations to small start-up businesses, and we can help you with every aspect of your project, large or small. From guiding you through today’s market, selecting tools that are right for you to helping you make best use of the technologies you already have, we can identify how technology might be used to meet the learning needs of your particular audience.

Design

We can design complete learning solutions to meet the needs of your organisation. You might want to re-think your whole approach to learning, or you might wish to start slowly, perhaps just turning some existing content  into high quality learning materials that take advantage of the affordances of new technologies. We work with you to turn your plans into well-designed tools that incorporate the highest standard of learning design.

Management

From individual training sessions to large international projects, we can get your project moving, coordinate the design of the learning materials and the production of the assets and make sure that materials are available when they need to be. We can take the pain out of the entire process of planning, designing and producing materials for your organisation by managing the project from start to finish, making sure that you have the learning you planned delivered when you need it.

Research

Making sure we know what we are doing, and why we are doing it.

We want to make sure we are always doing the right things - designing effective, successful learning tools that work in your context. We combine years of experience in teaching, learning and technology with ongoing, practical research into what is effective and successful in the world of technology-enhanced learning to develop tailor-made solutions for the world of education and training. As part of this research, we have developed two key research-backed tools that can be used both to predict and to increase the potential for success of a particular project.

Foundations for Transformation©

It is neither practical nor possible to draw up a definitive list of all the external factors which may have an impact on a particular technological intervention, but it is possible to highlight general foundational “blocks” that evidence suggests should be in place to provide the best chance of the intended goals being achieved. While the absence of some of these foundations does not necessarily spell disaster, the reasons for lackluster or ineffective implementations can often be traced back to a weakness in one or more of these elements. Conversely, their presence can smooth the way for technologies to be used in new and transforming ways in education.

The Transformation Framework©

Introducing technology into any place of learning is, for better or worse, a disruptive process. In addition to identifying the Foundations that may be necessary for success, we have also developed a Framework that can be used to identify where the impacts of a particular use of technology in education and training are likely to be observed. This Framework may be used in the planning stages of a project to highlight possibly unexpected outcomes as well as to help steer the project in  the direction of the desired outcomes. The Framework may also be used to monitor and evaluate new or existing uses of technology in learning.

Mark W. Millar BSc MSc EdM PhD

M W Millar Ltd was founded by Mark Millar in 2007. Having worked first as a high school teacher, and then as a freelance learning technologist in the UK and the US, Mark became increasingly convinced of both the potential of technology to enhance learning and the potential for it to get in the way if its use was not carefully thought out. Hence, the Company grew out of Mark's desire for excellence in online and technology-supported education and focuses on applying proven research-based principles to the design of technology-based learning solutions to meet each client’s needs. Today, Mark Millar  manages, develops and participates in learning projects for a wide range of clients and audiences around the world.

At M W Millar Ltd, we pride ourselves in keeping up to date with the latest advances in technology and its applications to the world of education and training through our membership and participation in professional bodies such as the eLearning Guild and the International Society for Technology in Education.
